Overtime is a staffing and coverage indicator. It reflects headcount levels, mandated minimum staffing, court appearances, and citywide obligations — parades, large details, and emergencies — far more than individual choice. We publish it as neutral fiscal transparency, aggregated so no one officer's pay is exposed.

Borough reflects the member's assigned command location. Overtime worked on citywide details or events is credited to the home command, so borough totals are indicative, not exact.
How to read this data (methodology)
- Fiscal year, not calendar. The city reports pay by fiscal year — July 1 through June 30. FY2025 (Jul 2024–Jun 2025) means July 2024 through June 2025.
- Sworn members only. Figures cover uniformed ranks (Police Officer through the executive corps); civilian titles such as School Safety and Traffic Enforcement Agents are excluded.
- We don't break out overtime by command. Overtime is frequently earned on citywide details, parades, and incidents away from an officer's home command, so attributing it to a precinct would be misleading. We report it by rank and borough only.
- Aggregate only. Nothing here identifies an individual. Any group with fewer than 10 members is withheld so no one's pay can be inferred.
